Hotels Beware: Miss This SSM Requirement and You Could Be Fined

On 19 June 2026, several hotels in Langkawi were issued compound notices by the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) for failing to publicly display their registered name and company registration number.

Why Does It Matter?

Under Section 30 of the Companies Act 2016, all registered companies including hotels are legally required to clearly display their registered name and company registration number at the following locations:

  • The main office and business premises (entrance and reception areas)
  • Any place where business is conducted
  • Any place where company records or books are kept

Additionally, the registered name and number must appear on:

  • Company letters, notices, and official publications (both physical and electronic)
  • Websites
  • Invoices, order forms, bills, and contracts
  • Cheques, receipts, and other financial documents
  • All forms of business correspondence and promotional materials

What Should You Do?

First, don’t panic.

SSM does not issue compounds without due process. Investigations and evaluations are conducted before any enforcement action is taken.

To prepare and stay compliant, use this simple checklist:

  1. Inspect your premises and documents: Ensure your hotel clearly displays the registered company name and number at all required locations and on all relevant materials.

  2. If missing, take immediate temporary measures:

    • Use laminated printed signage at entrances
    • Apply custom rubber stamps on printed materials such as invoices, bills, and other documents

Start working on a permanent solution to ensure full and ongoing compliance.

What If I’ve Received a Compound?

If your hotel has received a compound notice, you have 14 days to rectify the issue and respond to SSM. Here’s what to do:

  1. Take a photo as proof that corrective action has been taken (e.g. updated signage or stamped documents).

  2. Prepare and submit an official appeal letter to the SSM branch that issued the compound.

Your appeal may result in a reduction of the compound amount, provided timely and corrective actions have been demonstrated.
